Cosme Arana was born in Hatillo, Puerto Rico in September 1875. He wrote his first verses when he was eleven years old and at fourteen entered the Instituto Provincial to begin his studies to become an Elementary School Teacher. He received his teacher certification at the age of fifteen. He worked as a teacher until the age of twenty, when he entered the Department of Interior, Bureau of Public Works. His poetic works were published in the island’s newspapers and journals and even abroad.
