The author of “¡Sursum corda!”, Eugenio Benítez Castaño, was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico in 1878 and died in 1918.  He studied jurisprudence and law at the National University of Washington. He is brother to three other Puerto Rican poets: María Babiana Benítez, Alejandrina Benítez, and José Gautier Benítez.
