Manuel Benítez Flores
(He/Him)The writer, poet, journalist, educator, orator, and lawyer Manuel Benítez Flores was born in 1882 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He studied at the Escuela Superior, Escuela Colón in San Juan. Benítez Flores completed his university studies at the Instituto Civil de Segunda Enseñanza de Puerto Rico, studied Pharmacy Studies at the Subdelegación de Farmacia de Puerto Rico, and obtained the titles of Professor of Public Instruction and Special Professor of English and Professor of Agriculture (the latter from the University of Puerto Rico). He also undertook special studies in Education and Criminal Law and Evidence at Harvard University. Benítez Flores worked as a teacher in public schools in Fajardo, Río Grande, and Guayama, and as a professor at the University of Puerto Rico and the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza Unión Ibero-Americana of San Juan. The positions he held over the years include being the President of the Fraternidad Puertorriqueña de literatos y artistas, an honorary member of the Asociación de Maestros de Puerto Rico, a member of the Puerto Rico Legislature, a judge for the District Court of San Juan, and the president the Ateneo Puertorriqueño.
