María Cadilla de Martínez was born in 1886 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and died in 1951. In 1902 she completed her schooling with a certification to teach from Washington Institute and taught for the next twenty years. She was a founder and first president of the Unión de Mujeres Americanas (Union of American Women), a member of the Instituto de Cooperación Universitaria de Buenos Aires (the University Cooperation Institute of Buenos Aires), of the National Geographic Society, and of the Sociedad Folklórica del Uruguay, México, California y de Estados Unidos (Folkloric Society of Uruguay, Mexico, and the United States). Her publications include Cuentos a Lilian (Puerto Rico Ilustrado, 1925), La mística de Unamuno (S.L. talleres gráficos, 1934), Juegos y canciones infantiles de Puerto Rico (Baldrich, 1940), Alturas paralelas (Imprenta Venezuela, 1941), Hilton de la raza (Imprenta Venezuela, 1945), y Rememorando el pasado heróico (1945).
