Alberto O. Cappas—writer, community activist, and editor—was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico. Cappas grew up in East Harlem, New York City and graduated from Harlem Prep High School in 1967. He obtained a degree in American and Black Studies, with a specialization in Puerto Rican Studies and Sociology from SUNY Buffalo. Cappas went on to become Deputy Commissioner for Communications and Special Projects for the New York State Division for Youth, later  founding La Fortaleza Concept, an initiative created to protect East Harlem from gentrification. In 2013, Cappas organized the group Comité Latino Puertorriqueño (PRLC) to fight against gentrification and discrimination and to advocate for accessible housing. He is the editor of the Buffalo Latino Village, a monthly newspaper that covers issues related to the Puerto Rican and Latinx community in Buffalo, New York. Cappas is the author of various books, including Doña Julia: And Other Selected Poems (AuthorHouse, 2002), The Educational Pledge: Questions to Self-Development (Self-published, 2019), Pull Up Your Mind: Quotes to Free the Mind (Buffalo Latino Village Press, 2021), and Back to the Twilight Zone: A Puerto Rican Colony in Buffalo, New York (Buffalo Latino Village Press, 2023).
