Jaime Carrero
(He/Him)Jaime Carrero García was born in 1931 Mayagüez, Puerto Rico but moved to the United States at an early age. He is a painter, draftsman, novelist, playwright, poet, graphic designer, essayist, and professor. He studied at the New York, New York Art Instruction Center in 1949. After returning to the archipelago, he completed his high school education and enrolled at the Instituto Politécnico of San Germán, now known as the Universidad Interamericana of Puerto Rico (UIPR), where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the arts. He graduated with an MA from Pratt Institute in New York in 1957. In 1961, he took advanced painting courses in Florence and art history classes at Columbia University in 1962. A year later, he was named Chair of the Art Department at UIPR San Germán. Some of the prizes, fellowships, and honors he received include first place in the novel category for Los Nombres, (Ateneo Puertorriqueño, 1965); first place in the short story category for La Piedra de Orchard Beach (ESSO, 1966); first place in the novel category for Raquelo tiene un mensaje (Ateneo Puertorriqueño, 1967); and third place in the novel category for El Álbum de Doña Lucía Tiene una Página Vacía (ESSO, 1967). In 1974, he was awarded a prize for his poem My graphological Yo from the Illinois Art Council. His poetry has been published in magazines such as Guajana and Versiones. He is the author of Aquí los ángeles (Universidad Interamericana, 1960), Tiranosaurio rey amén, amén (Universidad Interamericana, 1963), Jet neorriqueño: Neo Rican Jetliner (Universidad Interamericana, 1964), and Las computadoras del sol (Self-published, 1970). His plays include Flag Inside (Ateneo Puertorriqueño prize, 1967), Sin bandera (1967), Pipo Subway no sabe reír (1971), Noo Jork (1972), La caja de caudales FM (1978), and A Pair of Wings (1977).
