Cayetano Coll y Toste was born on November 30, 1850 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and died in Madrid, Spain on 19 November 1930. He completed his elementary studies in Ponce, Puerto Rico. In addition to being a poet, he was a doctor, administrator, historian and the Official Historian of Puerto Rico from 1913 to 1930. He was the founder and editor of Boletín Histórico de Puerto Rico, a publication dedicated to the history, society, economy, and culture of the country. His works include “Crónicas de Arecibo” (1891); several journalistic publications in the Revista Puertorriqueña, La Democracia, Puerto Rico Ilustrado and Plumas Amigas; “Tratamiento de la fiebre amarilla” (1896); “Notas terapéuticas regionales” (1903); and “La medicina entre los indios” (1915). He was president of the Puerto Rican Ateneo, of the Sociedad de Historia, and also a corresponding member of the Real Academia de la Historia de España and the academies of History of Cuba and Venezuela. He received the Real Orden Americana Isabel La Católica award.
