Marta G. Cruz Concepción was born on October 18, 1956 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. She holds a BA in Liberal Arts and an MA in Hispanic Literature from Indiana University, an MA in Linguistics from the University of Michigan, and continued graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Howard University. Cruz Concepción specializes in late 20th and early 21st century Spanish literature and narratives written by Afro-Caribbean women writers. Cruz Concepción’s work has been published in Chiricú Journal: Latina/o Literatures, Arts, and Cultures, LatinoLink Web Magazine, and Revista HUES (Hear Us Emerging Sisters). She was a fellow for the Leadership Institute for Just and Resilient Communities in 2021 and the (Untapped) Water Education for Elected Latino Leaders in 2020, and has taught at institutions such as Santa Barbara City College, North Carolina Central University, and the University of Southern California. Her significant literary influences include María Luisa Bombal, Gabriel García Márquez, and Mayra Santos Febres. Cruz Concepción currently lives in Cloverdale, California, where she served as mayor from 2018 to 2022.
