Miriam Damaris Maldonado
(She/Her)Miriam Damaris Maldonado was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. 2008 after many life changes and moves, she decided to study social work at the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. In 2014, she moved to Houston, Texas where she currently lives. Maldonado is a social worker, activist, dancer, curandera, and founder of the feminist group Colectivo Colibrí. She earned an MA in creative writing from the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Maldonado is the author of Fuego del Aire (Editorial Bookanero, 2016), Textos Degenerados (Editorial La Chifurnia, 2019) and Enraizada (Valparaíso Editores, 2022), which is also available in English, translated by Walter Krochmal.. Maldonado draws inspiration for her poetry from every day experiences and believes that living and interrogating life is a poetic and revolutionary act, which is one and the same. Her significant literary influences include Julia de Burgos, Mayra Santos-Febres, Marcela Serrano, Angelamaria Dávila, Luis Palés Matos, Alejo Carpentier, and Gabriel García Márquez, among others.
