The poet Antonio Pérez Pierret was born in 1885 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and died in 1937 in his hometown. He completed his primary education at the Colegio de los Escolapios in Santurce, Puerto Rico, before moving to Spain to complete his education. He received a BA from the Universidad de Oviedo in 1899 and a law degree in 1905. In Oviedo, Pérez Pierret joined the literary circle Vetusta, headed by the poet Clarín. After graduation, he promptly returned to Puerto Rico to practice law for a brief period before quitting the profession and dedicating himself to finance and designing buildings in Santurce, Puerto Rico instead. Pérez Pierret’s poems “Vasco Núñez de Balboa” and “Mare Nostrum” were awarded a poetry prize by the Ateneo Puertorriqueño in 1914. That same year, he moved to New York, New York, where he resided for eight years. He published in newspapers and literary magazines, such as Gráfico, Idearium, Puerto Rico Ilustrado, and Revista de las Antillas. His work includes Bronces: Versos (Compañia Editorial Antillana, 1914).
