Margarita Mercedes Pintado Burgos was born in 1981 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She is a poet, essayist, professor, and the winner of the 2015 Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña’s Poetry Prize. She completed a BA in journalism and soon after enrolled in the Hispanic studies graduate program at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. In 2006, she enrolled in the Spanish and Portuguese department’s graduate program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the author of Ficción de venado (La Secta de los Perros, 2012), Una muchacha que se parece a mí (Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, 2016), Projeto inacabado da ruína/Proyecto inacabado de la ruina (Editorial Lumme Brasil, 2017), and Simultánea, la marea (Casa Vacía, 2022). Her literary influences include Lorenzo García Vega, Julia de Burgos, Manuel Ramos Otero, Macedonio Fernández, and Franz Kafka. Her writings have been published in various literary magazines, such as Temporales, Conexos y La Pequeña, as well as anthologies, such as Isla Escrita: Antología de la poesía de Cuba, Puerto Rico y República Dominicana (Amargord Ediciones, 2018) and Vientos Alisios: poesía puertorriqueña del 2000 al 2017 (Polibea, 2017).
