Ana Portnoy Brimmer was born in 1995 in Troy, New York. She is the daughter of Mexican-Jewish immigrants who moved to the west side of Puerto Rico. After studying English literature at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, she went on to complete an MA in English in the Río Piedras campus of that same institution. In 2018, she pursued an MFA in creative writing with a concentration in poetry at Rutgers University at Newark. She is an alumna of Under the Volcano International, Moko Writers Workshop, and Community of Writers. Portnoy Brimmer was named one of Poets & Writers 2021 Debut Poets and is the winner of the 2020 92Y’s Discovery Poetry Contest. Her work has been published in various print and online magazines and anthologies, such as The Paris Review, Pigeon Pages NYC, Society and Space, and Puerto Rico en mi corazón (Anomalous Press, 2019). She is the author of the loose poem, Strawberries (La Impresora, 2019), and the full-length poetry book To Love an Island (YesYes Books, 2021), with an edition in Spanish forthcoming with La Impresora.
