Translated from the Spanish by Iván Brave

Cristóbal Real was born in Santa Cruz of Tenerife on the Canary Islands in 1873 and died in 1966. He was a poet and journalist. His brothers Matías Real and Romualdo Real González were also literary figures–the former was a poet and the latter was a journalist. He collaborated with Puerto Rico Filantrópico and served as editor for Heraldo Español in 1901. In 1902, he moved to Puerto Rico. Together with his brothers, founded the literary journal Puerto Rico Ilustrado, the newspaper El Mundo, and the editorial house Tipografía Real Hermanos. He also worked at El Tiempo and El Ibérico, and served as director of El Mundo in 1922. He occasionally wrote for the satirical weeklies Pica-Pica and El Diluvio. In 1908, he won two medals in the artistic-literary contest of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, and another award from the same institution in 1920. His works include Palmas (1903), Floralia (1907), Del Cartamen, Rumor de Besos (1909) and Florecilla (1907).
