Matías Real was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, in 1874 and died in 1939. He was a poet and a journalist. He was the brother of the poets and journalists, Cristóbal Real and Romualdo Real. In 1906, he founded the literary journal, Flores y aromas alongside Francisco Martínez Viera. In 1902, he moved to Puerto Rico. Together with his brothers, founded the literary journal Puerto Rico Ilustrado, the newspaper El Mundo, and the editorial house Tipografía Real Hermanos. He worked as an editor of the Spanish newspaper, La República. In 1927, he returned to his Santa Cruz de Tenerife where he founded La Tarde with Martínez Viera and Victor Zurita Soler. He served as its director and editor until his death in 1939. He was the author of the poetry collections Oasis (Tip. Real Hermanos, 1915) and El jardín de la quietud (Tip. Real Hermanos, 1923).
