Mariano Riera Palmer was born in 1861 in San German, Puerto Rico, and passed away in 1922 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He was a poet, journalist, lawyer, and politician who lived most of his life in Mayagüez. His uncle, the prominent Puerto Rican politician and writer, Santiago R. Palmer, sent him to study law in Barcelona, Spain. In 1896, he founded the Mayagüez literary magazine, La revista blanca. He practiced law and served as district judge and from 1908 to 1911, he served as Mayagüez mayor. Riera Palmer formed part of literary organizations, such as the Ateneo Puertorriqueño and the Academia Antillana de la Lengua. His works include Cantares (Imp. La Revista blanca, 1898), Medinadas (Tip. La Voz de la Patria, 1903), Rasgos (Imp. El Progreso, 1903), Pensamientos para el pueblo (Imp. S. Valle, 1907), and Mis postales (Tip. Boletín Mercantil, 1904).
