Carmelo Romero—poet and playwright—was born in 1954 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He pursued university studies at Malcolm X College and Chicago State University. His work has been featured in publications such as Essence and Players magazines, and he was an editor for the Malcolm X New Liberation Newspaper. Romero organized with the Black Panther Party and Kawaida. He also worked with the Association For Family Living, Chicago Youth Centers, the Chicago Boys Club, and the Uptown Community Clinic.
