Patria Tió y Rodríguez
(She/Her)María Dolores Elena Patricia Tió Rodríguez de Sánchez, more commonly known as Patria Tió y Rodríguez, was born in 1866 in San Germán, Puerto Rico and died in 1943 in Havana, Cuba. She was a poet, writer, educator, advocate for women’s education, and the daughter of the poet Lola Rodríguez de Tió. She wrote under the pseudonym Elsa and began reciting and publishing her poetry at the age of fifteen. Tió y Rodríguez earned a BA and continued her studies in Cuba, where she obtained a PhD in sciences and philosophy. In 1892, at a Círculo Sangermeño gathering organized in honor of both her mother and herself in Lomas, Puerto Rico,, she delivered a speech in support of women's education and their role in society. Over the course of her life she lived both in Puerto Rico and Cuba. Her works include Un beso (1881) and Reviviendo el recuerdo…Versos a Lola (1926), and has been compiled and posthumously published as Patria Tío de Sánchez de Fuentes, Elsa (Colección Hipatia, 1979) by Carlos F. Mendoza Tió.
