José Luis Vega was born in 1948 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He worked as a professor at the University of Puerto Rico, where he was the Director of the Department of Hispanic Studies and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He also held the position of Director of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española, and he is currently its director. His published works include Signos vitales (Editorial Cultural, 1974), Las natas de los párpados (Ediciones Ventana, 1974), La naranja entera (Editorial Antillana, 1983), Tiempo de bolero (Editorial Cultural, 1985), Bajo los efectos de la poesía (Editorial Cultural, 1989), Solo de pasión/Teoría del sueño (Editorial de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, 1996), Techo a dos aguas (Editorial Plaza Mayor, 1998), Letra viva (1974–2000) (Visor Libros, 2002), Sínsoras (Ediciones Callejón, 2013), Botella al mar (Estampa Gallery, 2014), El arpa olvidada, o cómo se lee un poema (Pre-Textos, 2014), and Música de fondo (Editorial Pre-Textos, 2016).
