Lydia Vélez
(She/Her)Lydia Vélez Román was born in 1946 in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico and passed away in 2018. She was a writer and professor. In 1965, she began attending the University of Puerto Rico, but left before completing her degree. In 1970, she moved to New York, New York where she completed her studies. She received her MA from City University of New York (CUNY) in 1976 and her PhD from the University of California, Irvine in 1986. She taught Spanish American literature at Cal State Fullerton from 1985 to 2017. In recognition of her dedication, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures established the Lydia Vélez Student of Perseverance Award upon her retirement. Her works include Osadia de los soles truncos (Editorial Betania, 1991), Sigamos: Lecturas Literarias y Culturales (McGraw-Hill Humanities, 1997), and Memorias de escribanas (Cultural, 2000)..
