The doctor, writer, and journalist Manuel Zeno Gandía was born in 1855 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and died in 1930 in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1874, he earned a degree in medicine and surgery in Madrid, Spain and moved to France soon afterward to complete an internship. In 1876, he returned to Puerto Rico to practice medicine and edited the literary magazine La Opinión. A strong advocate of Puerto Rican independence, Zeno Gandía purchased the newspaper La Correspondencia in 1902, using it as a platform to support self-government and criticize political figures. In 1904, he co-founded the Partido de Unión de Puerto Rico. His works include La charca (La Correspondencia, 1894), Garduña (La Correspondencia, 1896), El negocio (Tip. La Justicia, 1922), and Redentores (Imp. Venezuela, 1925).
