Xavier Valcárcel de Jesús was born in 1985 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was raised in Loíza, Puerto Rico. He holds a BA in fine arts education and architecture and an MA in cultural management and administration from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. Valcárcel de Jesús is a visual artist, cultural worker, writer, and the recipient of the 2021 Letras Boricuas fellowship, granted by the Flamboyán Foundation. He is the author of the poetry collections Helio (La Impresora, 2022); Fe de calendario (La Impresora, 2016); El deber del pan (La Impresora, 2013); Restos de lumbre y despedida (Erizo Editorial, 2012); Palo de lluvia (Trabalis, 2010); Cama onda (2007); A ras del polvo/ Skimming the dust (La Impresora, 2021); and of the personal crónica Aterrizar no es regreso (Ediciones Alayubia, 2019). Valcárcel de Jesús has also published his work in a variety of Puerto Rican literary magazines, such as, Agentes Catalíticos, El Sótano 0093, and Sargasso: A Journal of Caribbean Literature, Language, & Culture among others. In 2009, he founded the press Atarraya Cartonera alongside the poet Nicole Delgado and self-published the poetry collection Anzuelos y carnadas, which he co-authored alongside the poet Ángel Antonio Ruiz Laboy. He contributed to the anthology 4M3R1C4 2.0 Novísima poesía latinoamericana (Ventana Abierta, 2010), edited by the Chilean writer Héctor Hernández Montecinos. In 2022, he self-published Restos de lumbre y despedida / Firelight and Farewells, which was translated by Eiric Durandal-Stormcrow.
