Night Walkers

Jesús Papoleto Meléndez

1979

We have seen many things, the nights

that we have walked the streets.

Once, our friends became fantasies where they lived

inside of lovely poems.

We made a song of that. There was a stanza

where there was a rhyme.

And we have walked the streets with the coldness

in the taste of it.

And there was another time,

I had to explain;

“The bright light? Oh, that's the sun,

Three dollars buys another bottle

of rum.”

And yesterday, there was Compañera,

a stray dog of family and square meals…

She walked the night streets with the coldness

in the taste of it.

“O, that's the rum.

Three dollars buys another bottle

of sun.”
