Taíra Barreto Canals
(She/Her)Taíra Barreto Canals was born in 1993 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She holds a BA and MA in journalism from the University of Puerto Rico. In 2000, she worked as a writer for the newspaper Visión Norte, later going on to write for The San Juan Daily Star, Metro, Periódico Visión, and RadioUniversidad. Both a teacher and an activist, Barreto Canals created the podcast “Prosa y Verso” as a space for art, poetry, literature, women, and the LGBTTIQ+ community. She also holds a second MA in creative writing with a concentration in poetry from the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Her literary influences include Angela María Dávila, Benjamin Torres Gotay, Roque Raquel Salas Rivera, and Naomi Klein. In January of 2024, she published her first book of poetry Llena Blancos (Ediciones Enserio).
