Silver and gold (trans.)
I prefer more than dazzling gold
the most divine glitter of silver:
gold is like blinding, killing sun,
and silver, the reflection of a diamond.
Silver wears the ocean when radiant
in his waves the moon itself portrays,
and silver is the bubbling waterfall
sprouting from the top, stunning.
And snow, the beautiful Madonna lilies,
the mist and the lusterless stars
wear silver nimbus on its ermines;
And silver even shows its reflections
on old age, in the gray hair of the old,
and in youth, in the dreams of children…
Oro y plata
Prefiero más que el oro deslumbrante,
los destellos divinos de la plata:
el oro es como un sol que ciega y mata,
y es la plata un reflejo de diamante.
De plata viste el mar cuando radiante
en sus ondas la luna se retrata,
y es plata la bullente catarata
que brota de las cumbres, fulgurante.
Y la nieve, las azucenas bellas,
las brumas y las pálidas estrellas
lucen nimbos de plata en sus armiños;
Y hasta muestra la plata sus reflejos
en la vejez, con canas en los viejos,
y en la infancia, con sueños en los niños…
