José A. Negrón Sanjurjo was born in 1864 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico and died in 1927. He was a poet, translator, journalist, bank manager, and educator. He taught in Caguas and Comerío, Puerto Rico and published his work in the newspapers El Buscapié and La Democracia, using the pen name Heráclito in the latter. Along with Gonzalo O’Neill and a group of writers, he co founded the literary magazine El Palenque de la Juventud in 1886. The Parnassian post-Romantic poet translated the works of several nineteenth-century French authors, including Alfredo de Musset and Victor Hugo, into Spanish. His own works include Mensajeros (1899), Versos postales (1903), and Poesías (Tip. Boletin mercantil, 1905).
