The Puerto Rican Literature Project

The poet and writer Martín José Travieso de Rivero was born in 1817, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He married Isidora Quixano Font de la Vall, with whom he had seven children. He worked as Public Surveyor (Agrimensor Público), Meritorious Clerk of the Secretariat of the Higher Political Government (Meritorio Escribiente de la Secretaría del Gobierno Superior Político), Section Chief of the Government Secretariat and General Captaincy (Jefe de Sección de la Secretaría del Gobierno y Capitanía General), Book and Newspaper Censor (Censor de libros y periódicos), and General Treasurer of the Treasury (Tesorero General de Hacienda). He also served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Roads and Canals and of the Academia de Buenas Letras, among others. In 1849, he received the Cruz de Caballero de la Real y distinguida orden de Carlos III, and in 1857, he was awarded the Cruz de Caballero de San Juan de Jerusalén. He wrote the book Un amor desgraciado; novela original en prosa y verso (1842) and collaborated on the Aguinaldo puertorriqueño (1843) with his short novel Pedro Duchateau and his poem “A un laurel.” For the Aguinaldo of 1846, he published the poems “A la Virgen,” “Al río de Bayamón,” “Recuerdos a una torre,” and “Cariño paternal.” Travieso de Rivero is also the author of the libretto for the opera Macías, composed by Felipe Gutiérrez Espinosa. Travieso de Rivero died of pulmonary tuberculosis in 1890.
