The poet and writer Oliver Baez Bendorf was born in 1987 in Iowa City, Iowa. He has German, Southern Italian, and Puerto Rican (Afro-Taíno and Spanish) ancestry. Baez Bendorf earned a BA in English literature from the University of Iowa and an MFA in poetry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As an educator, he has taught poetry at numerous institutions, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, District of Columbia public schools, and Mount Holyoke College. He has received numerous fellowships from institutions such as the National Endowment for the Arts, CantoMundo, and Lambda Literary and was the 2017–18 Halls Emerging Artist Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. In 2020, he was awarded the Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award by The Publishing Triangle. Baez Bendorf’s work has been featured in Poem-a-Day (Academy of American Poets), American Poetry Review, BOMB, and Black Warrior Review, among others. His debut full-length collection, The Spectral Wilderness (Kent State, 2015), was selected for the 2013 Stan & Tom Wick Poetry Prize. His second collection, Advantages of Being Evergreen (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2019), won the 2018 Open Book Poetry Competition from Cleveland State.
