David Hernández
(Él)David Hernández, known as “Chicago’s unofficial poet laureate,” was born in Cidra, Puerto Rico in 1946 and died in 2013. In 1955, he moved with his family to the Lake View neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. In 1971, along with musician Dean Karabatsos, he co-founded Street Sounds, a band that combined street poetry with music such as Latin jazz. Hernández taught poetry workshops in prisons, community centers, and the Chicago Public Schools. His works include Despertando (Waking Up, 1971), Satin City Lullaby (1985), Roof Top Piper (Tia Chucha Press, 1991), and The Urban Poems (2004).
