El Proyecto de la literatura puertorriqueña

Jesús Papoleto Meléndez nació en la ciudad de Nueva York en 1950. El poeta, dramaturgo, maestro y activista creció en la parte este del barrio de Harlem. En 1973 uno de los fundadores del Nuyorican Poets Café. Se desempeñó como maestro por 30 años, empezando de adolecente en los programas educativos New York’s Teachers and Writers Collaborative y Poets-in-the-Schools. En 1980, se transladó a California, donde enseñó en California Arts Council’s Artists in Communities and Young at Art, programas de las escuelas públicas en San Diego y Los Ángeles. También coordinó el programa California Poets in the Schools para el área de San Diego. A mediados de la década de 1990, se mudó de regreso a Nueva York, donde enseñó a través del programa Teachers and Writers Collaborative y en el Boricua College. Meléndez ha recibido numerosos premios y subvenciones, incluyendo el premio Artist for Community Enrichment (ACE) en 1995; New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship en poesía en 2001; el premio Louis Reyes Rivera Lifetime Achievement Award en 2004; el premio Universes Poetic Ensemble Company Award en 2006; el premio Reverendo Pedro Pietri Poetry Award en 2006; el premio Union Settlement Association Innovation Award en 2011; y la beca New York Foundation for the Arts Poetry Fellowship en 2011. La poesía de Meléndez se ha publicado en diversas antologías, incluyendo Pa’lante a La Luz–Charge Into The Light (Rogue Scholars Press, 2018), Word, An Anthology by A Gathering of the Tribes (2017) y ¡Manteca!: An Anthology of Afro-Latin@ Poets (Arte Publico Press, 2017).
